However, like humans, our furry friends also experience common health issues like motion sickness, nausea, and anxiety. These issues can be triggered in different situations like a car ride or fireworks etc.

To ensure that your dog remains healthy and doesn’t miss out on the fun, we’ll discuss two solutions to motion sickness in dogs: Dramamine and CBD.

How Do Dogs Get Motion Sick? – Causes & Symptoms

Generally, motion sickness is when your pet feels physically ill in a car, on a plane, or a boat. This sickness usually results from inner ear problems or when sensory organs receive mismatched information. It is more common in young dogs whose inner ear is still developing.

An example of mismatched information is when your dog can’t really feel the car moving but senses the backward or forward momentum.

Symptoms of Motion Sickness in Dogs

Here are some commonly observed signs of motion sickness in dogs:

  • vomiting
  • Drooling
  • Excessive yawning
  • Lethargy
  • Trembling
  • Unusual body posture
  • Whining
  • Panting
  • Wide eyes
  • Dry heaving
  • Frequent licking or smacking of lips
  • Chewing

Motion sickness must be treated as soon as possible before it becomes a habit or before your dog develops a fear of cars in general. Instead of forcing the poor guy into the car, address the problem and devise a solution.

The most common solution is Dramamine. Although effective, Dramamine comes with some undesirable side effects. Don’t worry though, we’re about to share a natural solution as well.

What is Dramamine?

Dramamine is a medication that inhibits the brain’s vestibular system. This system is responsible for detecting motion. Basically, Dramamine hinders information from going from the vestibular apparatus inside the ear to the brain. This results in weakened reflex actions like swallowing and vomiting.

In this way, Dramamine is useful when there are chances of overstimulation to the vestibular system.

Is Dramamine Safe for Dogs?

Although commonly used by humans, Dramamine is not yet approved by the FDA to be used for animals. Veterinarians legally prescribe it as an extra-label drug.

As far as effectiveness goes, Dramamine definitely gets the job done. However, like most of the other medications, it can also cause some side effects and must be used with caution.

Let’s look at some of the most common side-effects of Dramamine along with some precautionary measures that need to be taken when you give Dramamine to your dog.

Side Effects of Dramamine in Dogs

Some commonly observed side effects of Dramamine in dogs are:

  • Lethargy
  • Urine retention

In addition to these mild side-effects, Dramamine may also cause extreme side-effects like:

  • Vomiting

  • Weight loss

Whether mild or extreme, side effects must be reported to a veterinarian right away. It is extremely important to monitor your dog closely when you give it Dramamine. In this way, any unusual behavior won’t go unnoticed.

Necessary Precautions While Using Dramamine

First of all, you should never give Dramamine to your dog without consulting your vet first. Just because it suits your neighbor’s dog, doesn’t mean it will suit yours too.

Secondly, Dramamine is not recommended if your dog is already taking other medications. In some cases, it can even worsen an existing medical condition. Here’s a list of drugs that Dramamine can interact with:

  • Sedatives
  • Warfarin
  • Anticholinergic drugs
  • Tranquilizers

  • Heart diseases
  • Liver diseases
  • Pregnant or nursing
  • Indigestion
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Enlarged prostate
  • Urinary obstruction

It is safe to say that Dramamine must only be given when prescribed by a veterinarian.

Dogs with Cancer and CBDNatural Alternative to Dramamine – CBD Oil

Dramamine is not the only solution to your dog’s motion sickness. If you’re like me, you would also prefer natural solutions over medications to avoid side effects.

One of the best natural remedies for dogs is CBD oil.

Also known as hemp oil, CBD oil is extracted from the plant cannabis. It contains Cannabidiol and no, it does not get your pet ‘high’ as it does not have THC (tetrahydrocannabinol).

Full-spectrum CBD oil contains beneficial minerals, proteins, vitamins A, B, C, and fatty acids like omega-6 and omega-9. It also has 9 essential amino acids in addition to calcium, iron, zinc, and magnesium.

Is CBD Oil Safe for Dogs?

FDA has not yet approved CBD to be used for medicinal purposes and it is not intended to cure or prevent illnesses.

However, ongoing researches have not been able to reveal any proof of the harmful effects of CBD. In fact, on the contrary, CBD is found to be generally beneficial for pets and humans alike.

It is recommended to start with a small dosage of CBD and then gradually increase it until the desired results are achieved.

CBD for Motion Sickness in Dogs

CBD naturally contains anti-nausea properties. This is why it can be useful for both humans and dogs dealing with motion sickness.

According to a study, the anti-inflammatory and anti-nausea properties of CBD along with its ability to supplement the endocannabinoid system may be useful for lowering the chances of nausea and vomiting.

Another research by the University of Aberdeen observed the effects of cannabidiol acid (CBDa) on shrews and rats with nausea. The results revealed that CBDa helped to reduce anticipatory nausea so it may be a promising treatment for vomiting and nausea.

CBD products for pets usually come in two forms: CBD oil and CBD treats. They both work in the same way but are taken differently. CBD eases your dog’s nerves and stomach without altering their brain adversely.

A small dose of CBD oil is usually enough to prevent motion sickness in dogs. However, the exact dosage depends upon your dog’s size and bodyweight. More the weight, the higher the CBD dosage.

If you mix the CBD oil with your dog’s food, make sure that your dog eats it an hour or two before you start up your car. This will give CBD enough time to work and the food to settle down.

In addition to CBD oil for pets, CBD pet tinctures and treats can also be used to prevent motion sickness. CBD treats are easier to give to your dog since they are obviously made to be delicious. Just give them to your dog like you would give it a regular treat.

CBD pet treats usually come with the recommended dosage written already on the product packaging.

Final Thoughts

The overall benefits of CBD are still being studied but if you want to treat your dog’s motion sickness naturally, CBD products are worth a try.

Dramamine may cause side-effects but it is useful in preventing motion sickness nonetheless. You should continue using it if you’ve been treating your dog with it for a while and haven’t noticed any undesirable effects.

In any case, make sure to consult your veterinarian first before giving anything to your dog. This is to ensure the correct diagnosis so that you don’t end up giving the wrong medication to your furry friend.
